In order to help people identify where the chakras show up in their own lives, intuitive healers Dana Childs and Cyndi Dale describe the chakras as if they were people themselves, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. Childs and Dale hope that we see pieces of ourselves in the chakra personality types they’ve laid out—believing that a better understanding of these energies can be a launch pad for our own growth. Their new book, Chakras, Food, and You, is a guide to recognizing the chakras in yourself, your habits, and your lifestyle. It gives simple advice on how to nourish your unique energy through nutrition and self-care.
Understanding Your Major Chakra
By Dana Childs and Cyndi Dale
We believe you can understand a person—their strengths, weaknesses, even what motivates them—based on the formation of their chakras. Think of it as an energetic horoscope, not aligned with planets and stars but with the subtle prisms of sound and light that create your inner and outer reality.
In case this is new to you: Chakras are invisible energy centers that interact with one another, the external environment, and other living beings. Everyone has a unique formation of chakras. Some of your chakras will express themselves more strongly and others less, but each person tends to have one chakra that is central to their truest self. Pinpointing this major chakra—and understanding the energy that makes you special—can help you develop greater self-awareness and more ease in caring for yourself, achieving optimal health, and meeting your purpose.
We’ll describe each chakra’s strengths, weaknesses, and inspirations. Match yourself to the best-fitting description. (More than one may and probably will apply.) If it resonates, think about how your major chakra can inform your life: What patterns do you see in yourself? What practices nourish you?
First Chakra: The Manifester
You’re the builder and manifesting expert of the chakra zodiac, motivated by success and accomplishments. You can think of something you want to do and bam! You’re doing it. Why? Because hard work and a strong work ethic are woven into your bones. You’re dependable and decisive. On the flip side, you may struggle with distractions or overcommitting yourself. Be aware that your hard work ethic can slip into workaholism if you don’t consciously maintain a good life-work balance.
Second Chakra: The Creator
You feel the feelings and indulge in sensuality. No matter what you’re doing—painting, writing, designing, or arranging numbers on a balance sheet—you will do it with a creative flair. You are inspired by the act of creating, and you are high on style. You honor emotions, beauty, and sensuality. Just be careful that emotions—yours or others’—don’t take control and demand that you indulge in self-sabotaging behaviors. But steer clear of guilt. Ensure that the purpose of an emotional check-in is to align with your integrity. Don’t wallow in it.
Third Chakra: The Thinker
Your brain ticks along like a computer as you constantly process data, thoughts, and ideas. You thrive on positivity and are motivated by a can-do attitude. You are logical, structured, and intellectual. You thrive when making a plan and filling in all the details. However, you are vulnerable to others’ judgments and your own pesky perfectionism, which can be paralyzing. Success is yours if you set and maintain clear boundaries, refrain from making excuses, and don’t take others’ attitudes personally.
Fourth Chakra: The Relater
You lead from your heart center and believe life is happier when it’s shared. Basically, you’re a ball of love who wants to heal others with compassion and acceptance. You excel at sharing your things, your thoughts, and yourself. But you’re prone to becoming addicted to love, which can result in imbalances in giving and receiving. Be sure not to take others’ issues personally or define your own worth in how well you support others. Codependence won’t serve you.
Fifth Chakra: The Communicator
To share, to learn, to teach—these are the activities that light you up. You live to explore the philosophical. You value all forms of communication, and you can captivate just about anyone’s attention through your ability to tell stories with expressiveness, enthusiasm, and perfect word choice. Above all, you’re committed to seeking out and speaking the truth. That means you give great advice. Just be careful if you want to impress someone—it may be tempting to fib a little. Avoid ruminating thoughts if you can, or they’ll run amok in your head and cause anxiety.
Sixth Chakra: The Visualizer
Seeing the big picture thrills you. Not only can you imagine the possible outcomes of the present but you can mindfully perceive the nuances of the past. You can also visualize the most appealing spaces and then create them. Beauty matters. Design rules. Since you visualize, most of your decisions will come from a well-thought-out strategy. Be careful to check yourself for misperceptions, and don’t become so self-focused that you overlook others’ needs. When you’re creating beauty, be careful not to obsess about perfection. Remember that beauty comes from the inside, not only the outside.
Seventh Chakra: The Spiritualist
You illuminate any room with your devotion to your sense of spirit. You possess key spiritual qualities like ethics, values, and justice. Your major motivation is to operate in harmony with your higher power. Ultimately, you are a seeker who’s compelled to find your purpose and help others do the same. Because of that, you thrive on meditation and prayer, and you possess natural wisdom. However, all that insight can make you think you have all the answers. Watch out for an inflated ego, and keep an eye on judgmentalism, moodiness, and grandiosity. Give yourself permission to be human. Be honest with yourself about your own emotional and psychological issues instead of hiding behind spiritual beliefs.
