Need to shop for essentials or last-minute gifts but don’t want to get out of the car or spend too much time around people in the stores?

Table of Contents

Luckily, plenty of brick-and-mortar retailers offer “Buy Online Pick Up in Store” (aka BOPIS or BOPUS) programs, which allow you to shop online and then pick up for free in the store, often only a few hours later. In some cases, you can even get curbside service – great for when you’re rushing around during your lunch break or have a sleeping baby in the car! On the savings side, you’ll get to avoid the $10 or so in fees that you’d normally incur using same-day services and apps like Doordash, Postmates, UberEats and Instacart.

Check out the retailers below that currently offer in-store pickup — either same day or after the item is shipped to store. Just be sure to select the “pick up in store” option at checkout!

Stores That Offer In-Store Pickup and Curbside Service for Everything

Kmart

Image: Kmart.com

Pickup Options:

  • In-store pickup
  • In-Vehicle pickup

Shop Kmart online and skip the shipping fees. You can select items that are available for in-store pickup or curbside pickup. Add them to your cart and check out. At the time of pickup, be sure to have your email confirmation and photo ID. You’ll get an email when your order is ready for pickup. If you use in-vehicle pickup, an associate will be out with your order in five minutes or less, guaranteed!

Additional consideration: You can check to see if eligible items are available for pickup by checking on the item page.

Sears

Pickup options:

  • Free Store Pickup
  • In-Vehicle Pickup

Many items can be purchased online on the Sears website and then picked up for free as soon as they’re available. In addition, the store offers curbside pickup if you’re a Shop Your Way member (sign up here if you want to join the membership). You can head to the store to pick up your online order after you have received a “ready for pickup” email. Make sure to have your order confirmation, photo ID, and, if applicable, your original method of payment.

Once you have arrived at Sears, head to the merchandise pickup area. You will then use the merchandise pickup kiosk to scan the barcode located on your “ready for pickup” email or swipe the credit card used to make the purchase. An associate will then bring your items within five minutes.

If you chose in-vehicle pickup after arriving at the store, park in one of the reserved spaces for curbside delivery. You will then need to check in using the in-vehicle feature on the Sears app, and an associate will bring the items out within five minutes.

Additional consideration: Depending on your location, you can select to pick up some of your online orders at a local Kmart. If Kmart is an option for your items, then your nearest Kmart will show up as one of the listed stores for pickup.

Target

Pickup options:

  • Order Pickup
  • Drive Up

It’s a tale as old as time: You go into Target for one thing and emerge with 20. Take a more focused approach to your Target run by ordering online and picking up in-store. (Just steer clear of the dollar spot on your way to customer service.)

To see if an item is eligible for order pickup, look for “free ship to store” or “free order pickup” when adding items to your cart. You can also shop from a list of pickup-eligible items by browsing any category and selecting “buy online & pick up” from the “shipping & pickup” drop-down. If the price is lower in the store, you will automatically receive the lower price.

Target also offers a Drive-Up option for orders placed through the Target app, where a Target employee will bring your items directly to your car for free.

Additional consideration: Target is now offering an expanded fresh and frozen grocery assortment through Drive Up and Store pick-up options in over 1,500 stores.

Walmart

Pickup Options

  • Pickup Today
  • Curbside Pickup

Walmart offers many items that can be picked up same-day or shipped for free to your nearest Walmart, which is super-convenient if there’s something online that isn’t available at your local store.

Just shop your local Walmart online or in their mobile app, and choose your preferred pickup option: “pick up today” or “curbside pickup.” Walmart even offers a pickup discount on many of the items in your order. Just search “free pickup + discount” items in the left navigation on search pages.

You will receive an email notification when your order is ready for pickup. Simply go to the designated store pickup area to collect your items. For curbside pickup, park in the reserved parking and notify the store that you are there, and an associate will load the groceries into your vehicle.

Additional considerations: No Walmart nearby? No problem. There’s also an option to get your order delivered to a nearby FedEx Office location, where it will be held for you for free. Just choose this option at checkout.

How Stores Can Set Up Curbside Pickup Services

Online orders have significantly changed the way we shop. No longer do we have to go to a brick-and-mortar store and do our grocery shopping or wait in line for our prescriptions. Instead, we can have a store associate shop for us and, in a few hours, head to the store to pick up our items once the order is complete.

BOPIS and curbside pickup services aren’t available everywhere just yet, however. While these services might bring in a sizable profit for companies, it’s also expensive to operate. According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2016-2017, it cost Walmart $2 billion to operate home-delivery and in-store pickup services. So how do local stores in your area offer in-store and curbside pickup services? Here are a few steps those businesses should take to get started.

  • First, you must have a website or mobile app to allow your customers to place online orders.
  • Figure out the resources you need to be able to process online orders securely.
  • Create an in-store pickup and curbside pickup option for online orders.
  • Decide how and when customers are going to be allowed to pick up their orders.
  • Create a team that will shop for the online orders.
